The main reasons for the failure of ACS
The most common causes of malfunctions:
- Physical wear and tear of equipment: this is especially important for readers, turnstiles, electric locks, and outdoor controllers.
- Power surges: Can damage power supplies, controllers, and other equipment that is not protected by stabilizers and UPS.
- Cable infrastructure disruptions: Damage caused by construction work, rodents, or careless laying.
- Configuration errors: after unqualified changes in the ACS settings or software updates.
- Software or server hardware failure: if the system is running as part of a local network or integrated with other services (1C, Active Directory, etc.).
Work begins with diagnostics, which includes checking equipment, testing communication lines, analyzing event logs, checking the status of servers and databases. This allows you to determine exactly where the fault is located — in the hardware, software, or network infrastructure.
Thereafter:
- Faulty components are replaced or repaired: readers, controllers, locks, and power supplies.
- The software is configured: flashing controllers, restoring configurations, and correcting errors in the database.
- In case of a damaged cable network, it is repaired or partially replaced.
- If there are integration failures (for example, the ACS has stopped syncing with accounting systems), they are reconfigured.
After troubleshooting, the entire system is tested, all access points are monitored, and logging and historical data are checked. If necessary, backup copies and instructions for personnel are created.
Why is it important to contact specialists?
Unskilled repairs can lead to serious consequences, from complete loss of passageway data to security vulnerabilities. Only an experienced specialist:
- has access to technical documentation from ACS manufacturers;
- understands the architecture of a specific system (from Dahua, Hikvision, ZKTeco PERC and others);
- complies with the requirements of regulations and standards (GOST, PUE, SP, etc.);
- provides a guarantee for the work performed.
In addition, certified specialists can suggest updating the system if the equipment is outdated or unable to cope with current tasks, such as installing contactless card controllers, integration with video surveillance or mobile access.
If the access control system stops working, this is a direct risk to the business, and it must be eliminated with the participation of qualified engineers.
